Took a Leap Farm is a small Nigerian Dwarf dairy goat farm located just outside of Houlton, Maine. Specializing in fresh goat cheeses such as chèvre and feta, the farm is a recent dream-turned-reality that has been nine years in the making – ever since owners Kathryn Harnish and Robert Lawless moved to Aroostook County from suburban Illinois.
2012 has been a whirlwind of excitement for Took a Leap Farm. This is the first year that kids (of the goat persuasion) have been born on-site. A milking parlor and a cheese room have been built. And between all of the day-to-day activities required to run a farm full of rambunctious goats, they’ve recently passed their dairy inspection, meaning their delicious homemade cheeses will soon be available for purchase in their newly renovated farm store.
To celebrate, Harnish and Lawless are throwing an open house this Saturday and Sunday, June 2nd and 3rd. There will be incredibly small and incredibly cute baby goats (and a motley assortment of other farm animals) to fawn over. There will be cheese tasting a-plenty. There will be a fundraiser lunch and bake sale courtesy of the good folks at the Ark Animal Sanctuary.
And there will also be something a bit more imperceptible… perhaps you will notice it while sampling Ginger Lemon Honey Chèvre, or as you learn about raising angora rabbits from Keiser Angoras. Or maybe it will come to you as you stroll past the roaming chickens and into the barn – the heart of operations at Took a Leap Farm. This inconspicuous feeling is the sweetness that comes from achieving a dream that was a mere lofty aspiration a decade ago.
I will be speaking at 2pm on Saturday, discussing a few easy and delicious recipes that can be made with the artisan farmstead cheese from Took a Leap Farm – and providing samples. I do hope you can join me.
And, to entice you further, I should add that immediately following my session will be a cheese tasting spectacular, featuring handcrafted cheeses from around the state.
Whether you can make it on Saturday or Sunday, for just an hour or for the whole day, make plans to bring the family – and your appetite – to this bustling grand opening celebration!
